Swindon Borough Council has given the green light for a large-scale housing project in Swindon, with plans to build 1,552 homes at Kingsdown. The proposal, put forward by Persimmon Homes Wessex and Primegate Properties, has been approved and is set to bring significant changes to the area.
The zero-carbon ready development, located east of A419 between the B4019 and Stratton Wood, will showcase environmentally friendly features such as air source heat pumps, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging points for all homes.
A crucial aspect of the project is the early implementation of new infrastructure. This will include the construction of a new three-form primary school and nursery, as well as a bridge over the A419 connecting the B4019 (north) and Arkwight Road (south) via a new spine road within the scheme. Furthermore, off-site highway improvements and funding for bus services will be provided as part of the community contribution.

An integral part of the development is the creation of a mixed-use local center designed to serve the community’s retail, health, and other service needs. The focus on high-quality design aims to preserve ecological interests while establishing a unique, character-filled environment.
Additionally, 264 properties will be allocated to a local housing association partner, addressing the pressing housing needs of the area where around 5,400 people are currently waiting for accommodation.
Persimmon Homes Wessex’s Managing Director, Julian Roper, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting the benefits the project will bring to the local community. He emphasized the emphasis on creating quality homes and addressing local priorities through collaboration with various stakeholders.
The development also promises substantial green spaces, children’s play areas, sports facilities, biodiversity enhancement, financial contributions for park expansions, and measures to encourage walking and cycling.
