What would your perfect world look like? For students at Kingsbury Green Academy, this was the challenge set for a creative project. The year eight students were given a break from their usual lessons to design their own utopian communities.
The teams were tasked with the creative freedom to structure and build their ideal societies, with the essential requirements of housing, employment opportunities, and entertainment to ensure the happiness of the residents.
In addition to the design, the students had to calculate the cost of living in their utopia and create a 3D scale model, showcasing all the essential buildings. They then presented their utopian visions to their peers. The project emphasized essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, creativity, and public speaking – all fundamental aspects of learning at Kingsbury Green Academy.

One team comprising Jai, Madison, Harrison, and Jack envisioned a utopia containing a school, hospital, police station, and a shop. “Our utopia would be home to 1,000 utopians,” explained Jai. “We designed it to be affordable for everyone, ensuring access to necessities like food and clothes.”
Reflecting on the experience, Jack said, “We aimed to create the best design possible, incorporating key elements such as a school and a hospital. The hospital, in particular, stands out due to its unique architecture and engineering. We also included a flag and a helipad. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire day, especially the collaborative problem-solving in our team. We’re immensely proud of our accomplishments.”
At Kingsbury Green Academy, off-timetable days are integral to the educational approach, providing opportunities for students to apply their skills in diverse scenarios and reinforce classroom learning.
Principal Jason Tudor emphasized, “Our teaching focuses on imparting a range of skills that will benefit our students in their careers and future beyond the academy. Skills such as active listening, effective communication, problem-solving, creativity, and resilience are crucial in everyday life. Off-timetable days enable students to learn how to apply these skills differently, preparing them for future success.”
Kingsbury Green Academy, a part of the Ascend Learning Trust, is committed to providing enriching experiences for its students, empowering them for lifelong success.
