Lawn Manor Academy in Swindon has launched the Ocean Club, comprised of 25 members from years eight to eleven. The club meets weekly to leverage their science, math, and engineering skills to address environmental issues affecting the ocean. They are working on a beach clean trip to Brighton in collaboration with other UK schools running their own Ocean Club.
This initiative is part of a global effort led by KBR, an organization dedicated to creating a more sustainable future. Through KBR’s sustainability initiative, One Ocean, the students are focusing on engineering solutions to eliminate plastics in the ocean.
Kirsty Staff, head of Geography at Lawn Manor Academy, expressed her excitement about the initiative, stating, “Our pupils are very engaged with environmental issues and feel passionately about the plight of the oceans." She highlighted the significance of the students working alongside an outside company to apply real-life engineering and science skills to combat ocean pollution.
