How Music Strengthens the Mother-Daughter Bond

Emily Wadds, a devoted mother from Trowbridge, has discovered a remarkable way to connect with her 14-year-old daughter, Lydia, who has Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities. Despite being non-verbal, a full-time wheelchair user, and having epilepsy, Lydia’s passion for music has proven to be a powerful means of communication. As a valued member of Soundabout, a national learning disability music charity, Lydia has been participating in their music sessions for over four years.

According to Emily, the music sessions have profoundly impacted their relationship. She shared, “It’s just made us closer. It makes me notice things about Lydia, her expressions, and the noises she makes.” The approach at Soundabout is centered on the individual’s abilities and tailored to the group’s needs and interests. Staff are attentive to even the subtlest reactions, such as a slight tilt of the head, eye movement, or sound, all of which convey significant messages.

Through these sessions, Emily has learned to discern Lydia’s more subtle communications and expressions, deepening her understanding of her daughter. “I’ve got to know her more. She’s 14 now and I know her better now since doing Soundabout with her than I’ve ever known her,” shared Emily.

The expert practitioners at Soundabout equip parents and caregivers with simple activities and techniques, empowering them to engage musically with their loved ones beyond the sessions. Emily expressed that Soundabout has given her the confidence to create music with Lydia outside of the program, an experience she previously thought wouldn’t have been possible. “I would never do this without Soundabout. Spending an hour making music with Lydia. It just wouldn’t happen.”

In addition to strengthening their bond, Soundabout has also facilitated meaningful connections for Emily and Lydia within a community where they feel understood and supported. “It’s just lovely to be part of a community, where people understand and get us,” expressed Emily.
